Many of today’s smart TVs run Android TV or its newer face, Google TV: most Sony, TCL, Hisense and Philips models, plus streaming boxes such as Chromecast with Google TV and the NVIDIA Shield. That’s good news if you want to watch SofaIPTV or any other IPTV service, because these devices can run the best IPTV players straight from the Google Play Store, usually with no workarounds at all.
This guide takes you from a fresh TV to watching live channels: checking your device, installing a player, logging in, loading the TV guide and changing the settings that matter most.
Is my TV Android TV or Google TV?
Google TV is the newer home screen that runs on top of Android TV, so for IPTV they behave the same way. If your home screen shows a Google Play Store or a “Google TV” logo, you’re on the right platform. To check, open Settings › System › About and look for Android TV OS or Google TV.
Samsung (Tizen) and LG (webOS) TVs use different systems. If you have one of those, see our guide to IPTV apps for Samsung and LG TVs instead.
What you need
- Your login details: an Xtream Codes server URL, username and password, or an M3U link. They arrive in your welcome message after you order or start a free trial.
- A Google account signed in on the TV, to use the Play Store.
- A steady connection: Ethernet if your TV has a port, otherwise 5 GHz Wi-Fi close to the router.
Step 1: Install a player from the Play Store
Open the Google Play Store on the TV, search for the player and select Install. These are the two we recommend most on Android TV:
- TiviMate: a cable-style TV guide, favourites, catch-up and, in the paid Premium version, recording and multiple playlists. Our TiviMate setup guide walks through every screen.
- IPTV Smarters Pro: a simple layout with separate Live TV, Movies and Series sections, and the same look on phones and computers. See our IPTV Smarters Pro setup guide.
Check the developer name before installing; look-alike apps with similar names and logos exist. If a player isn’t listed in your country, our apps and devices page lists alternatives.
If your player isn’t in the Play Store
Android TV can install apps from outside the store, but only after you allow it. Install the free Downloader app from the Play Store first. Then turn on developer options by going to Settings › System › About and selecting the Android TV OS build entry seven times. Finally, allow Downloader to install apps, usually under Settings › Apps › Security & restrictions › Unknown sources. Menu names vary between brands, so look for “unknown sources” or “install unknown apps” if yours differs. Only download apps from the developer’s official website.
Step 2: Log in with Xtream Codes
Open the player and add a new playlist or user. The steps are the same in every app:
- Choose Xtream Codes (sometimes labelled Xtream Codes API).
- Enter the server URL exactly as given, including http:// and the port number.
- Enter your username and password, checking capital letters.
- Give the playlist a name, for example SofaIPTV, and save.
Typing long details with a remote is slow. Many Android TVs let you use the Google TV app on your phone as a keyboard, or you can plug in a USB keyboard. Xtream Codes is the better choice when you have both login types, because it loads the TV guide, catch-up and the on-demand library automatically; our M3U vs Xtream Codes guide explains why. If the app shows an error, see IPTV login errors and how to fix them.
Step 3: Load the TV guide
With Xtream Codes, the guide usually fills in within a few minutes. If channels show “No information”, update the EPG from the player’s settings, or add the separate guide link from your welcome message. Our explainer on how the IPTV EPG works covers the causes, including guides that are an hour out because of the time zone.
Step 4: Settings that make a difference
Match the frame rate
Live channels run at different frame rates: mostly 60 frames per second in North America and 50 in Europe. Turn on frame rate matching so the TV follows each channel, which removes judder on camera pans, especially in sport. On Google TV it is usually under Settings › Display & Sound › Advanced display settings › Match content frame rate; on other Android TVs, look in the display or picture settings. Many players, including TiviMate, also have their own auto frame rate option.
Keep storage and memory free
Smart TVs and budget boxes often have little storage and memory. Uninstall apps you never use, and clear the player’s cache from time to time in Settings › Apps › your player › Clear cache. A Chromecast with Google TV, for example, has limited storage, so this matters there.
Fix silent channels with stereo output
If a channel plays with no sound through a soundbar, set the audio output to PCM or Stereo in the TV’s sound settings. Our guide to fixing a black screen or no sound covers this and other playback problems.
When a separate box is worth it
Apps built into the TV work well on recent models, but budget TVs can feel slow with large channel lists. If menus lag or channels take long to start, a separate streaming box such as Chromecast with Google TV or an NVIDIA Shield is an affordable upgrade, and it can move with you to a new TV later. A Fire TV Stick works too; see our Firestick installation guide.
Quick troubleshooting
- App not in the Play Store: use another recommended player, or install from the developer’s official site as described above.
- Login fails: retype the details carefully and check the URL includes http:// and the port.
- Buffering in the evening: switch to Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi first, then work through our IPTV buffering guide.
- Guide an hour out: set the TV’s date and time to automatic, then adjust the EPG offset in the player.
Summary
Android TV and Google TV are among the easiest places to watch IPTV: install TiviMate or IPTV Smarters Pro from the Play Store, log in with Xtream Codes, check the guide, and turn on frame rate matching. Not a customer yet? Try SofaIPTV free for 24 hours on your own TV before choosing a plan.
Frequently asked questions
Can I install IPTV apps on Google TV?
Yes. Google TV runs on Android TV, so players such as TiviMate and IPTV Smarters Pro can usually be installed straight from the Google Play Store.
Which is the best IPTV app for Android TV?
TiviMate for the most cable-like TV guide, or IPTV Smarters Pro for a simpler layout that matches the phone and computer apps.
Do I need a separate box if my TV runs Android TV?
Not usually. A separate box helps mainly on budget or older TVs that feel slow with large channel lists.
Why does sport judder on my Android TV?
The TV is probably showing a 50 or 60 fps channel at a different refresh rate. Turn on Match content frame rate in the display settings, or auto frame rate in your player.
